Jon Tanous completed his fourth season with the Bombers in 2014-15. He helped guide Ithaca to its first trip to the NCAA round of 16 in program history and back-to-back Empire 8 titles in 2012 and 2013.Â
Tanous joined the men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach after serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Potsdam. During his six-season tenure at Potsdam, he was involved in all aspects of the program. Tanous recruited and coached 14 SUNYAC All-Academic selections and five All-SUNYAC honorees.
In each of his seasons, Tanous guided student-athletes to rank in the SUNYAC top five for three-point field goal percentage, while in his last three seasons, one of his players led the conference in that category. The team ranked in the conference top two for team three-point percentage during five of his six seasons with the Bears.
Tanous served as the co-director for the Potsdam Bears International Summer Basketball Camp and the Can-Am Hoops Classic since 2007. For three years, he also worked in the admissions department. Tanous helped increase the number of enrolled freshman from New York City by 218 percent.
A four-year shooting guard for the Bears, Tanous helped Potsdam to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament as it reached the "sweet sixteen" in 2004 and the "elite eight" in 2005.
A Liberty, N.Y. native, Tanous graduated with a degree in elementary education before earning his master’s in technology education in 2008.
He is an active member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York.
